A number of 36 varieties of rice were compared for different traits. The correlation coefficient of grain yield with tiller number, harvest index, length of grain, ratio of length to width of grain, amylase content, days to 50 percent flowering and days to full maturity were positive and significant (P<0.01). The coefficient of determination in stepwise regression between dependent (yield) and independent (tiller number, days to 50 percent flowering, harvest index) variables was 53 percent. The path analysis showed that tiller number, days to 50 percent flowering and harvest index had the most direct effect on the yield. These traits had direct effect on yield and could be used for estimation of the selection index. Four varieties with the highest index were selected as the best lines.
