Study of nitrogen fertilizer effect on nitrogen harvest index (NHI) and corn yield

Abstract

To determine the effect of N-fertilizer on nitrogen harvest index (NHI), crop production and growth indices of corn (S.C.704 cultivar), an experiment was conducted with five nitrogen rates (100, 140, 180, 220 and 260 kg N/ha) in a randomly complete block design in four replicates. The effect of N-fertilizer rates on variation of grain yield, number of kernels, 1000-kernel weight, nitrogen harvest index (NHI), ear weight per unit area, biological yield and percentage of protein of kernels were significant (P< 0.05). Additional N-fertilizer increased LAI, LAID, CGR and EGR, while decreased NUE. Highest correlations were observed between ear weights per unit area, 1000-kernel weight, nitrogen harvest index and kernel harvest index with yield production.
