Study of drought tolerance of 15 lentil varieties

Authors

Abstract

In order to assess the drought tolerance in 15 lentil genotypes, a field experiment was conducted during 2001-02 growing season in Dryland Agricultural Research Institute (DARI) station of Shirvan, in northern Khorasan, Iran, under rainfed and irrigated conditions. The experimental design was RCB with three replications. Data for agronomic traits of plant height, number of empty and filled pods, days to maturity, leaf electrical conductivity and leaf relative water content, were recorded at appropriate time during the growing season. The seed yield and related traits were measured at seed maturity stage. Drought tolerance of lentil genotypes was assessed using cell membrane stability and leaf relative water content. There were no significant differences among genotypes for plant height, number of empty pods, days to maturity, leaf electrical conductivity and leaf relative water content. The differences between genotypes for number of filled pod, number of seeds per plant, 100- seed weight and seed yield were significant index, none of the other procedures showed a close relationship with seed yield.
